“The Rice Story” 『お米の物語』

 

 

 

 

When there was no rice, it was called “mud & water.” 『お米が無い時は、泥と水と呼ばれるものでした。』

Then, we planted the rice with our friends. 『そして、僕達は友達と一緒にお米を植えました。』

Then, the rice grew. And then, we made homes for the tadpoles with shovels. 『そして、お米が育ちました。 そして、僕達はスコップを使って、オタマジャクシの家を作りました。』

Then, the rice grew and grew and grew and grew. And, we cut the rice with shape sickles. 『そして、お米が育って、育って、育ちました。 そして、僕達はお米を鋭い鎌で切りました。』

And then, we threshed the rice with a machine that had a lot of nails. And, sometimes, we used a board which had a lot of  nails. 『そして、僕達は釘がたくさん付いてる機械を使ってお米を脱穀しました。 時々、釘がたくさん付いてる板も使いました。』

And then, I shook the rice with a basket that had a lot of square holes. And, that basket caught all the grass. So, I could separate the grass from the grains. 『そして、僕は四角い穴がたくさん開いてるバスケットを振りました。 そして、そのバスケットは草をぜーんぶ取ってくれたので、お米と草を分けることが出来ました。』

My dad carried 6 kilograms rice all the way to our home in Tin Shui Wai. 『僕のお父さんが六キロのお米を天水圍の家まで運びました。』

I ate the rice with my mom who was pregnant.  And, my dad cooked more rice, and I ate it. It was good. 『僕は、妊娠してるお母さんと一緒に御飯を食べました。 そして、お父さんがもっとご飯を作ってくれたので、それを食べました。 おいしかったです。』

Adding colors: 色付け

The Child: “This car has a red wing and a lot of stickers. You can open this door for the driver to go out.”  Also, the front side (right hand) is messy because bugs stick…

子供：「このレースカーには赤いウイングとたくさんのステッカーが付いてるの。 ここから、運転手が出てくるんだよ。」 また、車のフロント（写真右手）は虫がひっつくので、汚れてます。

この活動から学んだこと： The things I learned from this activity.

1. Animism goes away, and all the realistic thoughts come out.  : 『アニミズム』が消え、現実的な考えが反映されてる。
2. He doesn’t need to feel to paint all of the body.  : 全体に色を付ける必要を感じない。
3. He uses his left hand as well as his right hand.  : 右手と同じくらい、左手も使う事が出来る。

単純記憶と会話からの画

 

前回の『レースカーって、なぁに？』の会話をメモしたものを読み、子供の記憶と記憶から出てきた言葉のみを頼りにレースカーの絵を描きました。

We read our dialogue about “What’s racecar?” Then, the child draw racecars from his memory and those words came up from his memory.

 

色とりどりのレースカー達。 小さい車は、赤ちゃんだそうです。

Colorful racecars. The small ones are “the babies.”

この活動から学んだ事：The things I learned from this activity.

1. 形よりも、色の組み合わせを大切にしてる。 : More than the shapes of each car, he minds colors on each car.
2. Not contour lines, but gesture drawing.  : 輪郭線ではなく、ジェスチャーを意識した描き方。
3. 前感覚器の特徴の１つである『アニミズム』が見られる。 ：One of the characteristics of preoperational stage, “Animism,” is shown.

３週間の日本への帰省で、気持ちがリセット。

１１月には、マカオグランプリがあるので、海の大好きなレースカーをプロジェクトの主題に。

We visited Japan about 3 weeks, so we were refreshed.

November is “Macau Grand Prix” (F3 race), so we decided “Racecar” as our project’s subject.

 

 

まずは、レースカーについて知ってる事を言葉で表現。

At first, I asked Kai to describe what he knew about racecar.

 

 レースカーって、なに？: What is racecar?

２０１１年９月１日

 

MABO: レースカーって、なに？（What is racecar?）

Kai: レースするカー。 (Car that race.)

        ライトニングは、レースカー。 (Lightning is  a racecar)

        フランチェスコは速いのレースカー。 (Francisco is a fast racecar.)

        シュートロロッキーは、日本語のレースカー。 (Shutororocky is a Japanese racecar.)

        あの、あ、フィン は、レースカー 速い  (Ah, a, Fin is , a racecar, fast.)

        でも、レースカーじゃないや。  (But, it’s not racecar)

        レースカーじゃない。 (It’s not racecar.)

        フィンは、スパイカー。 It’s     (Fin is a spy car.  それは…)

        That’s English. （これは、英語だね。）

        OK. （ま、いいや。）

        Also, Holly is a spy car. （ホリーも、スパイカーだよ。）

        Spy cars in CARS 2 they there is bad cars, right? And, Holly and Fin defeat and try to hurt them. （『カーズ２』の中に出てくる車には、悪い奴がいるでしょ？ そして、ホリーとフィンは負かそうとするし、相手を傷つけようとするんだよ。）

MABO: So, I see you talked about racecars in the cartoon “CARS II”. Now, I would like to know about racecar, not in the movie, but in the real world. （うん。 今まで、アニメ『カーズ２』の中に出てくるレースカーの事を話してたよね。 こっからは、現実の世界のレースカーについて聞きたいな。）

 

Kai: I think all the race car has spoilers. （レースカーは、全部スポイラーが付いてると思うよ。）

        They all have engines that are really fast. （全部、めっちゃ速いエンジンが付いてるの。）

        They have many different kinds of colors. Blue, white, yellow, orange, some are purple. And, gray, brown, black, red, and gold. Pink, there is more and more but I don’t know. (MABO: Why don’t you know?) Because, they are hard colors. For example, glass. It’s not the color, right? Well, actually, in a long long long time ago, they thought glass was a color. （みんな、いろーんな違う色なの。 青、白、黄色、オレンジ、んで、時々紫。 それと、灰色と茶色、黒、赤、金色。 ピンクもね！ もっともっと色があるんだけど、分からないの。 【MABO：なんで？】 難しい色だから。 例えば、ガラス。 ガラスの色は、色じゃないでしょ？ あ、まぁ、むかーし、むかーし、むかーしの人は、ガラスも色だと思ったんだけど…）

(When he was counting different colors, he was using his his fingers：色を数え上げてたとき、指を折って数えてました。)

        Also, all race cars have stickers because Lightning has stickers. I think Francesco has stickers. （それに、レースカーは全部、ステッカーを貼ってるんだ。 ライトニングも貼ってたでしょ。 フランチェスコもステッカーを貼ってたと思うんだ。）

(MABO: OK, I have to cook for dinner. 　：いいね～。　ちょっと、晩飯作るね。)

(Later, when Jessica comes home, this conversation continues with Jessica and Kai.  その後、帰宅してきたジェシカが引き続き、この会話を続けました。)

Jessica: What is a race car?　（レースカーって、なに？）

Kai: A race car is a car that is very fast. They are the fastest cars. They can go 20 miles an hour. They all have a window in the front seat. They are this big (spreads arms out, about the size of kitchen table). There is one driver in the car. I don’t know what the inside looks like. （レースカーは、とっても速い車。　一番、速い車。　一時間に２０マイルは行くことが出来るんよ。　どの車も、前の席には窓が付いてる。　このぐらいの大きさ【腕を伸ばして、だいたいダイニングテーブルくらいの大きさ】。　一台の車に、一人の運転手。　車の中が、どんな風になってるのかは解らんとよねー。）

Jessica: How are they different from regular cars?　（普通の車とは、どう違うの？）

Kai:  They have a special track called a race track. Regular cars need a regular road. Since they go so fast, bugs stick to the race cars. （特別に走るコース、レースコースがあるんよ！　普通の車は、普通の道路を走るけどね。　速く走るから、虫が車に引っ付いちゃう。）

MABO: Is there any different in sound?　（音では、何か違うことあるのかな？）

Kai: Regular sounds make the “BVVVVVVVVVVV” but race cars sound like “VRRRRRRRRR” When they turn, they go like (screeching noise) and when they crash, they go like “crrrrrr” [crashing noise]. They sometimes crash because they are really fast and when they don’t turn right, they crash into something, like a wall or a pillow because its so pretty they are looking in the wrong direction. 　（普通のは、ぶぅううって音だけど、レースカーの音は　ブルルルルウって音がする。　レースカーが曲がるとき、キーーー！って音がするし、ぶつかる時はグフッって音がする。　レースカーは、めっちゃ速いし、きちんと曲がれなかった時とか、時々ぶつかるんよ。　壁とか、クッションとか、なにかに。　とっても可愛いから、見てると間違った方向に行っちゃう。）

        About ten race at one time. One at a time are the winners. 　（だいたい１０台の車が一度にレースする。　一台で走るときは、勝者だけ。）”

この会話から学んだ事：The things I learned from this dialogue.

1. He got a huge impact from the cartoon movie, “CARS 2.” : 映画『カーズ２』の多大な影響


2. He does not have any memory from the past racecar activities.  :　過去のレースカーについての活動を全く覚えてない。


3. His color concept, “glass is ‘hard color’, ” is unique and interesting.  :　色についての概念、『ガラスの色は難しい』というアイデアはユニークで面白い。


4. He shows his understanding of basic structure of racecars. : レースカーの基本的な構造の理解が見える。


5. He shows his understanding of color concept.


6. He shows his understanding of systematic structure of racecars. For example, “one driver for one car” or “racecars go on racetrack. Not the regular road.”  ：レースカーのシステム（一台に付き一人の運転手。　レースカーは一般道ではなくレース場を走る。）


7. He shows his understanding of his number concept. He is familiar with his size, numbers under 10 or 20, and so on. ：数字に付いての理解が見える。　子ども自身の大きさ、１０～２０といった数字以下だと親近感を持った理解が感じられる。


8. His sound reflection is rich.  :  音についての反応が、豊か。

手紙：A Letter

最近出会って、すぐに引っ越してしまった女の子。
A girl, Kai met recently, moved into another town, right away.

その子にメロメロの海は、「うちに遊びに来てね」って手紙を書きました。
Kai wrote a letter for her asking, "Come to my home and play."

その子から届いた返事に「どこのバス停で降りるの？」って書いてあったので、バス停を見に行きました。
The girl wrote back and asked, "which bus stop should I take?", so we went to see the but stop near our appartment.

家に帰って、プリントアウトした写真を使って、お返事の手紙書き。

At home, Kai wrote a leter with printed out pictures.

 

切ったり、貼ったりしながら、出来るだけ見て解りやすいようにバス停に丸を付けたり、矢印を書いたり。 “バスの写真を道路の上に走らせる！”ってアイデアに気付いた時は、すごく嬉しそうでした。
Cut & paste, allow and circle. We tried to make the letter to be easy to recognize. When Kai got the idea to put "the bus picture" on the "street picture," he seemed really happy.

 

いつになく、かなり真剣です: Unusually, he is serious.

Fish Project: おさかなプロジェクト #1

 

拾ってきた水槽を、どう使うか？ 淡水魚を入れるのか、海水魚を入れるのか？ はたまた、全く別のモノに使うのか？？

KAIリーダーの元、話し合い。

図書館から借りてきた海水魚の本、淡水魚の本を見ながら、検討。

結果、『海水魚！ ニモの水槽にする！！』という所に落ち着きました。

How do we use this “new” fish tank? Fresh water tank? Salt water tank? Or, something different? ?

Kai took a leadership to decide what we do, while we read two books from library: Saltwater fish & Freshwater fish.

As a result, we have decided to establish a “saltwater tank with ‘NIMO’ !! ”

まず、空っぽの水槽を見ながら、どんな水槽にするのか？ 想像しながら、お絵かき。

At first, Kai drew the tank’s layout with observing the empty tank.

最初の絵：ダイバーが一人と、底に砂。 書きこんである文字“DAIZ”は、ダイバー（Diver）の発音から文字を書こうとして、悪戦苦闘した所です。 でも、魚はどこへ？？

First Picture: A diver and sand on the bottom. The letters, “DAIZ,” is his try to write “DIVER” from phonics. I don’t know from where he got “Z" though…

And, where is fish???

 

 

 

最初の絵から拡張された水槽： 魚が来ました！ 見えにくいけど、ダイバーが二人とエイが一匹、底のほうにはSnail（貝/タニシ？）も追加されてます。 タニシのような貝は、以前の水槽に入れてた影響でしょう。

Expanded fish tank: Fishes are here! It’s hard to see, but now we have two divers and one sting-ray. There is a snail on the bottom too.

図書館から借りてる海水魚水槽の本を見ながら、“必要なモノ”をリストアップ。

Listing up from the library book about how to start saltwater fish tank.

（ボールペンを使って、このリストを書いてる時にKAIは「おとうさん！ このペン、転がる！！」って事を発見！ 父：『そう！ さきっちょに小さなボールが入ってるんよ！ だから、ボールペンって言うんだよ！！』 うん。 これだけ細かいことに気がつけるってのは、いいな！！）

(While he was writing this list, he realized that the top of the pen was rolling. So, he said, “this is rolling!!” I was really surprised from his observation skill. )

さっそく、出来上がったリストを手に、お買い物へ。

あら！？ 元朗の海水魚ショップが潰れてる… この前まで、開いてたのに。

ローカルのお店で、店員さんとのコミュニケーションを大切にしながら買い物をしよう！と考えていたのに、それが出来なくなってしまいました。

仕方が無いので、旺角の金魚街までバスにゆられて行くことに。

Going shopping with the list. I wanted to go to a local shop, so Kai could have a relaxed communication with the store staff. However, the Yuen Long’s saltwater fish shop was closed! So, we went all the way to Mong Kok, the fish street.

（KAIは、先日買った魚をすくうアミを持参。 お店の人の視線がキツイ…）

(Somehow, Kai brought his fish net, so the shop keepers were looking him with caution...)

 

金魚街は、それはそれは、たくさんの熱帯魚のお店が並んでるんだけど、その分お客さんの量も多くって、５歳児の買い物に付き合ってくださる店員さんを探す事は出来ませんでした…

海はリストを見せながら、いろんなお店の方に尋ねてみましたが、そもそも、英語が通じない… 『金魚街では、英語が通じない！』 これは、新しい発見ですが、今回のプロジェクトにはちょっと逆風… そんな中、とにかくいろんなお店を見てまわる事が出来たので、父が店員さんの代わりに品物を見ながら、『なにがリストにあるんだい？』 『このポンプは２００ドルだよ。』 などと言いながら、買い物を終了♪

もうひとつ、金魚街の店員さんの態度について気がついた事は 『子供は注意力が散漫で、すぐに何か壊すし、水槽のガラスをバンバン叩いたりするし、油断できねぇ！』って視線… お店に入ると、キツイ視線。。。 そして、すぐに飛んでくる 『モーア！』の声。

はぁ…

 

やっぱり、ローカルで、頼りになって、出来れば子供の客を理解してくれるお店があるといいんだけどなぁ…

On this street, there were so many aquarium shops. Nevertheless, there were a lot of customers too, so I could not find any shop that could take care of “Five” years old customer.

Still, Kai tried to show his list and asked a lot of people, but most of them did not understand English… So, instead of shop keeper, I asked him what he needed, this is how much, and blah blah blah…  Since we could see a lot of shops, I think we could get the cheapest stuffs.

 

But, anyway, I wish we could find a local shop for the next try.

さかなと海：Fish & KAI

 

Montereyに住んでいた時はモントレー水族館へ、Fairfaxに住んでいた時には、Academy of Scienceへ行って、いつも魚を眺めていました。

When we lived in Monterey, we were the members of Monterey Bay Aquarium. In Fairfax, we were the members of Academy of Sciences. So, since Kai was a baby, we often times took him to see fishes.

 

 

 

 

父が魚釣りが好きなので、一緒に釣りに行くこともありました。

Because I love fishing, I took Kai to go to fishing too.

（2008/9. 海２歳７ヶ月の頃）

 

 

Fairfaxのアパートには２００リットルの水槽を部屋に置いて、おさかなを飼っていました。

In Fairfax, we had a 50gal fish tank!!

（2009年1月 水槽を立ち上げ！ 水槽・水槽台はゴミ捨て場からのリサイクル品でタダ♪）

2010年、香港へ引っ越しました。

Then, we moved to Hong Kong.

香港は海の幸に恵まれているので、本格的な釣りを始め、海も初めて魚を釣り上げました。

 

街市では、いつも飛び跳ねる魚たちを眺めます。

 

先日、またしてもゴミ捨て場で、水槽を拾いました！

 

これから、おさかなプロジェクトの始まりです！

Let’s begin a fish project!!

Banana Project #1: Finding Banana Tree バナナの木を探して。

When I arrived Hong Kong, I noticed that there were a lot of Banana trees here.

But, I was not sure where we could have access to the Banana trees. A lot of times, the Banana trees were in a private property or a farm, so we could not see, touch, smell, and feel (and taste?) the tree.

As a first movement as our Banana Project, we walked around. And we have been finding some locations for easy “Banana Tree” access, such as Nam Sang Wai, Ha Pak Nai, and so on.

香港に着いてから、バナナの木があちらこちらにあることに気が付きましたが、その多くが個人の所有地であったり、畑であったりして、なかなかバナナの木に近づくことが出来ませんでした。 そこで、バナナ・プロジェクトの第一歩として、近所を散策して回りました。 その結果、南生圍や下白泥などで実際に手で触れることが出来るバナナの木を発見しました♪

 

It was a surprise for us to see Banana flower.

バナナの花を見つけては、驚いていました。

 

 

Also, at the wet market, we could find many different types of Banana.

And, we tasted them♪

また、街市にて、いろんな種類のバナナを見つけることも出来ました。

もちろん、食べ比べをしました♪

Light Table：ライトテーブル

We used to play with a lot of different kinds of lights: the Sun light, candle light, flash light, day light, night light, Christmas light, reflection light, etc.

One of our favorite one was light table.

 

以前は、いろんな光を使って遊んでいました：お日様の光、ロウソクの光、懐中電灯の光、昼間の光、夜の光、クリスマスライト、反射した光、などなど。

そのなかで、一番のお気に入りはライトテーブルでの遊びでした。

When we moved to Hong Kong, we had to make another one.  This time, we made an instant light table with a coffee table.  Put a white paper on the top of the table, which is a glass top, so the light can go through. And then, we put a fish tank light underneath. That’s all !!

香港に引っ越したので、新しいテーブルを作らないといけませんでした。 今回は、コーヒーテーブルをインスタントライトテーブルとして使うことにしました。 ガラスのテーブルに白い紙を敷いて、下から水槽用のライトを照らす。 それだけです。

 

 

Right away, we used it for drawing.

さっそく、お絵かきに使ってみました。

ライトがあるのと無いので、ずいぶんと印象が変わります。   

The next day, we put sea-glass on the table, then we changed paper. Now, Kai started using a hole punch. It’s just simple activity, but Kai spent about two ours happily making holes. He found that he could make a lot of different shapes with a hole punch.

次の日、ライトテーブルにシーグラスを乗せてみました。 その後、テーブルトップの紙を張り替えて、ホールパンチを使うことにしました。 とてもシンプルな活動ですが、海は２時間ほど楽しそうに続けました。 この遊びの中で、海は１つの穴を開けるホールパンチで、いろんな形を作れることを発見しました。

海：『いもむしー！（Caterpillar !）』

Hubble Space Scope & Space Shuttle: ハッブル宇宙望遠鏡とスペースシャトル

In the morning of April 13, 2011, we read a book, “１００かいだてのいえ” written by Toshio Iwai.  In this book, a boy visits a 100 story high building, and at the top of the building, he watches space by telescope. He sees a lot of stars and galaxies. But, in the real life of Hong Kong, there is no stars in the sky… This city is too bright or something going on to the sky. Anyway, how can we see stars? How can we experience it???

Fortunately, this day was a free admission day for museums in HK. And, “Hubble IMAX” was on air at the Hong Kong Space Museum. Thus, we visited this museum. We brought a toy Space Shuttle too, so we could play on our way.

2011年4月13日の朝、岩井俊雄さんの絵本“１００かいだてのいえ”を読みました。 この本の中で、ある少年が100階建ての家に遊びに行き、その屋上にある天体望遠鏡で宇宙を覗きます。 たくさんの星や銀河！ ところが、実際に香港で生活してみると、ここの空には星が無いことに気が付きます。 街の光が明るすぎるのか？ それとも、何か大気の状態が… とにかく、どうやったら香港で星を見ることができるでしょう？ どうやったら、『体験』することができるでしょう？

運の良いことに、この日は香港の博物館が入場料無料の日！ しかも、香港太空館のIMAXシアターではハッブルをやってるでは無いですか！ というわけで、昔から海が持ってるトニカのスペースシャトルを手に出かけました。

 

The show was great, and we could see a lot of spectacular scenes of space. Provably, the “best” experience for the stars, galaxies, and space shuttle, in HK. (I still prefer the real experience though…)  After  we watched the show, we explored the museum. First, we found a model of Hubble Space Scope.

IMAXの映像は、とても素晴らしいものでした。 おそらく、香港で星・銀河・スペースシャトルなどについて『体験』するならば、最高のショーだと思います。（自分は、やっぱり出来るなら本物の体験をして欲しいけど…） このショーを見た後、ミュージアムの中を歩き、まず最初に、ハッブル宇宙望遠鏡を見つけました♪

 

    

At first, Kai started playing with his own space shuttle by placing it on the Space Shuttle picture.

まず、海は説明が書いてあるパネルのスペースシャトルの絵の上に、自分のスペースシャトルを重ねて遊びました。

And, we sketched it.

その後、いつものようにスケッチ。

Kai said, “In my picture, the door is open!”

海は「僕の絵の中では、ドアが開いてるんだよ！」って言いました。

It’s a simple contour drawing, and he put an allow showing the depth of telescope. I noticed that, when he sketches dinosaurs, he usually mixes contour and gesture drawing, but this time he used only contour drawing. I, actually, felt something similar feeling from Hubble: machine, metal, straight lines, and something mechanical.  It is interesting to see how he changes his drawing technique by the objects.

この絵は、シンプルな輪郭で描かれており、望遠鏡の中へと入っていく部分に海は矢印を書き込みました。 今回自分が気づいた事は、普段、恐竜のスケッチをする時、海は輪郭とジェスチャーの両方を使って絵を描くのですが、今回は輪郭だけを使って描いた事。 実は、自分もハッブル宇宙望遠鏡のスケッチをしてる時に、同じような事を感じました。 金属的で、直線的な存在。 自分は、こうやって海が描く対象物によって、自然と描き方を使い分けてることが、面白いなぁ～と思いました。

Second, we found a Space Shuttle. We observed it, talked about it, and went inside to see.

After that, we started sketching.

次に、スペースシャトルを発見♪ 観察して、気付いたことを話し合い、実物大模型のコクピットを覗きました。

その後、スケッチ開始。

 

    

He traced his own Space Shuttle, then added those booster engines. The round things on the side of cockpit are the oval shapes that space shuttle has. (I don’t know what those are, but surely, they have those… ) He also put a small house behind the space shuttle, and he said, “it’s a house very far away.” It was interesting to see how well his depth perception developed.

海は、まず、自分の持ってるスペースシャトルをスケッチブックの上に置き、それを鉛筆でなぞるところから始めました。 その後、シャトルの細かい部分を描き、ブースターエンジンへと移りました。 コクピット横の渦巻きのような丸以外は、ほとんどシンプルな輪郭で描かれています。 また、最後に小さな家をスペースシャトルの奥に描き、海は『この家は、とっても遠くにあるんだよー』って言ってました。 この事から、遠近感が解ってきてるんだなぁ～って思いました。
