Children’s Discovery Museum in San Jose

April 23, we visited Children’s Discovery Museum in San Jose.

…………….

This museum was pretty good!!

I feel that sometime, the experience that children have in museum is like “DOT.” When they enter the museum, suddenly children face to those “unrealistic world,” and yes, it is fun. It is fun, but it is too far from children’s real life experiences. I feel that some importance of children, such as Bronfenbrenner’s  ecological system or Dewey’s pragmatic experiences, were totally ignored…

However, Discovery Museum in Sausalito(SF Bay Area), which I love, is different. Their attractions and settings are all based on local children’s real life. So, the museum experiences are the part of children’s life or expansion of children’s life. It is not “DOT.” It is a part of dimension.

In this point, the San Jose museum is not focused on local children’s life. But, they chose the themes, which overlap all children, such as “water,” “rain,” “Pizza,” and so on.

Also, I felt a lot of things they think it’s important.

For example, there were Rachel Carson’s words, “Sense of Wonder” in two different rooms, one whole sentences and another one just a part of it.

Moreover, their facepainting room!!! The museum has a room for just the facepainting. The room setting is the GREENROOM, so they have a lot of lights and whole wall is filled with mirror!!  There was a table and self-service paint materials were set up. So, children choose what they need, and they watch their faces in the mirror and paint by themselves!

I thought it was something strange here!!

While I was walking around the museum, I saw a lot of children with face paint on. But, their quality was really bad… So, I was thinking,

“Was that Cat? or What???”

You know, usually an adult stays in the face-painting area, and this person paints children’s face, Spiderman or Butterfly or something children like.

But, here, CHILDREN PAINT THEIR FACES!!

Oh, I love it! I love it, and somehow, my face was painted instead of the child’s face…

And, the second floor!!

It was so gorgeous! How can I describe this gorgeousness? It was like old England gentleman club or something. You know, those “rich” people gather, drink some “expensive” drinks, play billiard, and talk something “important.” That atmosphere was in this “4 & under” room. Every furniture was really cool and elegant.

The message I received in this room was that

“If you are younger and younger, you get more and more respect.”

Great.
